On one single day here in the state of California over 19,000 people called local and state crisis-hotlines seeking shelter, safety, and support.
Providing housing to victims and their children is critical – it helps save lives by offering a lifeline to safety. This is why WSLB is so thankful to have the support of both HomeAid LA and Lennar Homes.
Their generosity created an additional 12 beds at our Emergency Shelter. This addition expanded our housing capacity and we will now be able to shelter upwards of 140 more victims each year.

WomenShelter of Long Beach is honored to receive a $2,500 award from the Port of Long Beach to support the agency’s growing Outreach and Education Department. The Port’s contribution will support two of WSLB’s flagship Outreach Events: June’s Family Fun Day Event and October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month Event.
“We are extremely grateful for the Port’s continued support. We are looking forward to bringing these important outreach events to our community. Thank you to the Port for partnering with WomenShelter in our efforts to spread awareness regarding domestic violence and healthy relationships,” Mary Ellen Mitchell, WSLB Executive Director.
For over forty years, WomenShelter has provided services to abused women, men, and children by offering protection, support, and victim advocacy. We are extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to celebrate the opening of our new emergency shelter, Cherese’s Safe Home, and honor our very special friends with over 300 attendees at our 2018 Gala Celebration: It’s a New Day… It’s a Fresh Start… It’s a Safe Home! This new shelter, located in the city of Long Beach, is a pillar of hope for this community offering those escaping abuse with a chance to begin again and live a life without fear or hurt. It is with the support of our community and special friends like Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, Cherese Mari Laulhere in memoriam, and Wendi McLendon-Covey and Greg Covey that WomenShelter is able to provide free, inclusive life-saving services to every victim and survivor of domestic violence. Many thanks to all of the attendees, sponsors, and donors for their support!
